Extron's patented PURE3 codec is a powerful, groundbreaking, purpose-built codec designed specifically for Pro AV applications. For over 20 years, Extron has been engineering video transmission and signal processing solutions that deliver uncompromised image quality and performance. By leveraging our expertise in video transmission and our knowledge of the Pro AV market and applications, we created PURE3 from the ground up to address the unique needs of the professional AV industry.

PURE3 is a unique wavelet-based compression technology that exceeds the performance characteristics found in standards-based compression systems. Most codecs make compromises in either image quality, bandwidth requirements, or latency. Extron’s no-compromise PURE3 codec offers the best off all three with its groundbreaking simultaneous delivery of high quality, low bitrate, and virtually no latency. Video signals are encoded with 4:4:4 color quantization, while maintaining original source quality and native resolution. The PURE3 codec also features advanced error concealment, providing high immunity to network errors such as bit errors, jitter, and out-of-order or dropped data packets. PURE3 error concealment provides robust picture delivery without the increased latency or bandwidth typically introduced by forward error correction – FEC systems.

PURE3 is different from most codecs used in the Pro AV industry today. It was developed from the ground up by Extron’s expert team of signal transmission and processing engineers. This unique, patented video processing technology sets the industry benchmark for visual performance. The PURE3 codec captures and preserves video and computer graphics signals at native resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rate, maintaining all pixel detail and motion information to ensure accurate reproduction of the original input signal. In addition, PURE3 capitalizes on periods of low motion with its exclusive Intelligent Selective Streaming technology that achieves incredibly low bit rates while maintaining visually lossless performance.

By developing our own codec, we are able to design to our own exacting specifications and have absolute control over the end product. We can continually refine the signal processing algorithms, enhance signal compatibility, and add features at will. This also allows us to quickly respond to market or technology-related advancements as they emerge and opens the way to accommodate application-specific requests from AV integrators.

4:4:4 Chroma Sampling

HDMI up to 4K @ 60Hz (4096 x 2160) with full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling ensures accurate reproduction of source images with no loss of detail. Many competing AV over IP solutions use 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which trades color detail for lower bitrates. Such chroma subsampling may be acceptable with full-motion video content, but often impacts the clarity of PC-generated content. NAV systems are a no-compromise solution that leverages the PURE3 codec to deliver both low bitrates and superior image quality.

Error Concealment

Offers high immunity to network errors, ensuring reliable transmission of high quality imagery with the ability to conceal errors even during incidents of heavy packet loss. Picture data from previous frames are held at the decoder for use during times of packet loss. When packet errors occur, this data is presented, concealing missing information. As such, PURE3 Error Correction does not increase latency or add overhead like FEC - Forward Error Correction used by other competitors.

PURE3 Error Concealment in action: Network error is concealed in existing video frame. It is localized to a small area and updated with new, accurate imagery in a successive frame.
