What are Fiber Optic Products?

Fiber optic products include the same familiar functions that are available in other families of AV products, such as extenders, distribution amplifiers, switchers, and matrix switchers. The main difference is that the signals are converted to light for transmission over fiber optic cabling. The ability to transmit AV and control signals over fiber provides certain advantages for a wide variety of AV applications.

Fiber optic cabling has emerged as the new standard for AV designers and integrators concerned with future-proofing their systems. As video technologies and standards continue to evolve, AV system designers and integrators are continually challenged with providing a cable infrastructure to support high resolution video, audio, and control signals commonly used today and anticipating the needs of tomorrow. Today’s digital video standards require multi-gigabit data rates to deliver high resolution video from the source to the display.

For the moderate to long distances found in modern AV systems, fiber optic cables offer several advantages over coaxial and twisted pair cables including the capability to send AV signals over extreme distances, zero signal degradation along the cable, and immunity to outside interference. Signals sent through fiber are also inherently secure, making fiber-based transmission the preferred choice in government, military, medical applications, and other sensitive environments.

Leading AV designers and integrators have also learned that fiber optic cabling ensures their AV systems support the high resolution digital video signals of today and provide a path to higher resolutions in the future. Fiber has an extremely high bandwidth, which means it is capable of carrying very large amounts of information. Therefore, fiber optic cabling that was previously installed for 1920x1200 computer video can easily handle even higher resolutions of today, such as the emerging 4K standards. The capability to reuse the fiber optic infrastructure when updating an AV system saves time and money.

Fiber Optic Distribution Amplifiers

Extron Fiber Optic Distribution Amplifiers enable distribution and long haul transmission of AV and RS-232 control signals over fiber optic cable. They provide active, individually isolated optical outputs for distribution to FOX Series fiber optic receivers, switchers, or matrix switchers. Fiber Optic Matrix Switchers

Extron Fiber Optic Matrix Switchers are designed for complete, end-to-end digital AV signal transmission and routing over fiber optic cable. They are available in sizes from 8x8 up to 320x320 for standard models, and up to 1000x1000 and larger through the Extron Matrix 1K program. Supporting video resolutions up to 4K, they feature very high speed, all-digital switching of DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, 3G-SDI, RGB, HD component, and standard definition video. Fiber Optic Audio and Control Products

Extron Fiber Optic Audio and Control Products enable centralized processing of audio and RS-232 control signals. A fiber optic audio extractor accepts signals from a FOX Series transmitter, extracts the two-channel audio for independent processing and routing, and then re-transmits the original signal. RS-232 inserters provide a bidirectional fiber optic connection to a FOX Series extender for the insertion and extraction of control data, while maintaining a continuous pass-through link for video and audio. Choosing the Right Fiber Optic Products

Enterprise-Wide Signal Distribution over a Fiber Optic Infrastructure

Extron FOX Series products are designed for complete, end-to-end AV and control signal transmission and routing over fiber optic cable. As the most extensive line of fiber optic products in the industry, the FOX Series offers extenders, scalers, switchers, distribution amplifiers, and signal processors and supports a wide range of digital and analog video formats, including DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, 3G-SDI, RGB, HD component, and standard definition video. They feature all-digital technology to maintain full digital signal integrity throughout the signal path, so that computer and video images up to 4096x2160 resolution are transmitted with a 4:4:4 color space to preserve the quality of the image.

  • Streamlining Migration to 4K Video Distribution - FOX Matrix Switchers are designed to work with all FOX and FOX II Series products. When used with FOX II 4K Series extenders, Extron FOX Matrix Switchers accept and route 4K video, multi channel audio, and control, enabling a 4K video distribution system up to 1000x1000 and larger. This capability enables existing FOX systems to be easily upgraded to 4K resolutions without requiring any cabling, hardware, software, or firmware updates to the matrix, streamlining the migration path to 4K resolutions. Extron FOX Matrix Switchers are ideal for 4K video distribution in a wide variety of applications, including simulation, defense, medical, entertainment, digital cinema, and other environments.
  • AV Signal Distribution in a Secure Environment - FOX Series fiber optic products are designed for AV signal distribution in a secure environment, such as a government or military operation center. Extenders support one-way transmission of AV signals and isolate sources from destinations, which is critical for a secure environment. Matrix switchers include features specifically designed to protect sensitive information. Secure Partitioning segregates sources and destinations in a secure environment to enable separating secure and unclassified information. Priority Switching assigns security levels to each input and output to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Enterprise-wide AV Signal Distribution in a Large Facility - FOX Series fiber optic products are ideal for enterprise-wide AV signal distribution in a large facility, such as a corporate or university campus. A complete fiber optic infrastructure enables a central control room for signal distribution and extension, reducing the need for large equipment closets in every room. Once installed, a fiber optic infrastructure can support future upgrades without pulling new cable, which reduces costs over the life of the system. A central control room also enables the capability of sharing resources and content across multiple rooms and buildings.
  • KVM Signal Extension and Switching - The Extron FOX USB Extender Plus is a fiber optic transmitter and receiver set for long haul transmission of USB signals over fiber optic cabling. Used in conjunction with an Extron FOX Series DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, or VGA extender, the FOX USB Extender Plus is capable of transmitting Keyboard-Video-Mouse - KVM signals very long distances over a fiber optic infrastructure. As part of the extensive FOX Series of fiber optic products from Extron, FOX extenders can be used for simple point-to-point applications or in combination with FOX Series matrix switchers for support of enterprise-wide installations.
  • AV Signal Extension over Extreme Distances - FOX Series fiber optic products are available as 850 nm multimode models for moderate-range transmissions up to 2 km (1.25 miles) and 1310 nm singlemode models for extreme distances up to 30 km (18.75 miles).

The application diagram below consists of multiple briefing rooms, conference rooms, or classrooms that require the capability to video conference to remote locations. To reduce the amount of equipment that must be purchased, a central control room provides a farm of video conferencing CODECs that are shared among the rooms. Extron FOX Series fiber optic extenders send and receive high resolution video, audio, and control signals over a fiber optic infrastructure from the rooms to a FOX Matrix 3200 in the central control room. The matrix switcher enables connected rooms to access the CODECs, and allows any source signal to be sent to any display. This centralized switching configuration reduces the need to have conferencing and switching equipment within each room, and it is easily scalable to large facilities.

DVI Signal Distribution with Local and Remote Devices

The Extron DMS Series Modular DVI Matrix Switchers represent a new level of matrix switching for DVI. They combine the simplicity and reliability of a fixed I/O matrix switcher with the convenience and flexibility of a modular matrix switcher. DMS Series matrix switchers accept any combination of available DMS DVI or DMS Fiber matrix boards.

The Extron DFX 100 Fiber Optic Extender is a transmitter and receiver set that provides extension of single link DVI-D signals long distances over one fiber optic cable and is compatible with the DMS Fiber matrix boards. Engineered for reliability and exceptional high resolution image performance, it uses all-digital technology to deliver perfect pixel-for-pixel transmission of images up to 1920x1200, including HDTV 1080p/60 and 2K. The DFX 100 extends DVI-D signals over a multimode fiber optic cable at lengths up to 300 meters (984 feet).

The DMS Series and DFX 100 are ideal for a wide range of applications that require routing of high-resolution DVI digital video signals without copy protection. In the application diagram below, signals are routed between local and remote sources and displays.

Extending Signals over Extreme Distances

Extron Fiber Optic Extenders enable long haul transmission of AV and control signals over fiber optic cable at extreme distances. Engineered for reliability and exceptional high resolution image performance, they feature all-digital technology that delivers pixel-for-pixel transmission of DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D, 3G-SDI, RGB, HD component, and standard definition video.

Fiber optic extenders are available for any budget in a variety of form factors. For example, the FOX II DP 4K Fiber Optic Extender is a transmitter and receiver set for long haul transmission of HDCP-compliant DisplayPort video, multi-channel audio, RS-232 control, and IR control signals over fiber optic cabling. Engineered with uncompromising quality and proven performance, it uses Extron all-digital technology to deliver pixel-for-pixel transmission of DisplayPort computer and video images up to 4096x2160, including 1080p/60 with Deep Color. The FOX II T DP 4K and FOX II R DP 4K bring new features to the FOX Series, including support for 4K resolutions, multi-channel audio, an audio return channel, and IR support. It also includes many integrator-friendly features such as Key Minder®, EDID Minder®, audio embedding, audio gain and attenuation, as well as real-time system monitoring.
