Extron Streaming AV Over IP Design Guide

Extron Streaming AV Over IP Design Guide

For Professional AV Systems

Every day, IP streaming of audio and video used by government, industry, and consumers expands into new applications. Surveillance, broadcast, corporate, and government use of IP streaming is very mature while VoIP, desktop videoconferencing, and public video-on-demand services continue to connect individuals to streaming solutions every day.

The migration of AV solutions to real-time IP streaming represents the next great innovation for our industry. Moving audiovisual solutions onto IP networks represents opportunities to:

  1. Extend the reach of real-time communication beyond a room or building to a global enterprise
  2. Increase the scalability of AV distribution systems with digital quality
  3. Simplify the wiring, installation, and operation of systems
  4. Improve the ability to document, analyze, and share mixed video or graphic information used in all types of presentations

Each of these improvements can provide new capabilities that increase the efficiency of an enterprise, or reduce the capital expenditure and operational costs of audiovisual installations.

At InfoComm 2011, Extron introduced the SME 100, an H.264 streaming media encoder supporting a wide variety of video and computer-video formats commonly used in many audiovisual systems. The SME 100 is the result of a product development program at Extron, based on the H.264 compression standard. Extron also offers a mature range of high performance streaming products based on the PURE3® codec, obtained during the acquisition of the Electrosonic Products Division in 2010. Extron offers in-depth training programs on AV streaming technologies and IP networking topics essential to integrating successful solutions, as part of The Extron School of Emerging Technologies.

Attaining proficiency in the subject of streaming AV over IP will be essential to delivering sound streaming solutions. This Guide represents a starting point for Extron customers. It provides reference data, information on important technical topics, and real-world application examples demonstrating practical uses of Extron streaming technologies.
